How can I save on my heating costs?

  • The best way to save on pool heating costs is to obtain a thermal barrier. Most of a pool’s heat is lost during the evening, through evaporation. By using a solar cover or other thermal barrier, less heat is lost and less gas is needed to bring the pool back to desired temperature.
  • NOTE: Gas fired heaters should be diagnosed and repaired by trained personnel.

Where can my heater be installed?

  • There are specific venting requirements and clearance distances that must be met to ensure proper operation. Consult the owner’s manual for exact specifications for your model of heater.
  • NOTE: Gas fired heaters should be diagnosed and repaired by trained personnel.

Why does my heater “cycle” on and off?

  • Inadequate water flow caused by a dirty filter or closed valves.
  • External bypass needs adjusting.
  • Reversed water connections.
  • Water pressure switch is out of adjustment.
  • It is also possible that the thermostat is out of calibration.

Why doesn’t my heater reach my desired temperature?

  • The thermostat may be set too low.
  • Inadequate gas supply.
  • Malfunctioning thermostat.
  • You are losing heat faster then you are adding it. (If the heat loss in the pool is greater than the heat input, the heater might be too small or you may need a thermal barrier). Use a thermal barrier to help prevent heat loss

Why would my heater be leaking?

  • The heat exchanger may be leaking because,
      (1) Chemical imbalance.
      (2) Sanitizer damage.
      (3) Winter freeze damage.
      (4) Failed joints.
  • Regardless of the reason, a Hayward service company must be contacted to inspect the failed exchanger. Contact an Authorized Hayward Dealer/technician for examination.

How do I light my pilot light?

  • Verify that the local gas valve, located outside the heater and all valves supplying gas to the heater are open. Remove the front lower cabinet door to expose the internal gas valve. The black knob on the gas valve will have three positions; “OFF”, “PILOT”, & “ON”. Rotate the knob to the “PILOT” position and press and hold the knob down. This manually opens the pilot diaphragm and sends gas to the pilot assembly. While holding the knob down, press in the “click-lite” 3-4 times. This should ignite the pilot.  Hold the knob down for a minute, so the pilot generator heats up, then release. Turn the gas valve knob to the “ON” position. If the heater has been off for a long time, (more than one week), wait 3-5 minutes prior to firing the heater to give the pilot generator enough time to heat up.

Why won’t the pilot light?

  • If you are having trouble lighting the pilot, there are several things to consider. There maybe spider webs in the pilot head, preventing the gas from getting to the sparker. This is very common after a period of non-use.
  • The pilot generator may be bad and not able to get hot enough to supply sufficient voltage to operate the heater.
  • The “click-lite” may not be sparking. Contact a Hayward Authorized dealer for repair.

Why do I have to frequently re-light the pilot?

  • Pilot outages are most commonly caused by environmental factors: High wind gusts, excessive rain or a sprinkler head forcing water into the cabinet.
  • It could be due to less obvious issues. Low gas supply, failing pilot generator, a bad gas valve, slight blockage in the pilot assembly. If you are unable to light the pilot, visit your local Hayward dealer for guidance.

What power supply is required for IDL and IDL2?

  • The IDL model heater operates on 240VAC, ONLY.
  • The IDL2 is dual voltage and can operate on either 120VAC or 240VAC. When connecting the IDL2 to 120V, the voltage selector plug must be changed. A licensed electrician should perform any electrical connections.

What power supply do I need for my H100/ABG?

  • The H100/ABG heater comes supplied with a 120 VAC cord. The unit must be plugged into
a 120 VAC, receptacle. Local codes will dictate the specifics. An extension cord must never be used, as voltage fluctuations may cause improper heater operation.
